SCOTLAND: SO MUCH MORE THAN WHISKY AND GOLF
Looking to experience something new, immerse yourself in another world, and return home feeling more fulfilled and connected? Skip the standard vacation and take an adventure to Scotland where the travel is reasonably simple but the payback is wonderfully complex. With a rich history, abundant castles, quaint villages, and gorgeous landscapes, Scotland will spark joy in the entire family not just the golfers!
sleeping arrangements
Scotland offers a wonderful mix of city hotels, manor houses, and country castles to enhance your visit. Look for properties that are steeped in history to add interest to your experience. My recent scouting trip through Scotland included stops at these lovely options which all offer contemporary comforts, top shelf service, and an array of interesting activities. Perfect for the modern explorer!
Cameron House is a beautiful, lakeside manor house near Glasgow that is well-suited to couples, families, and even world leaders (Obama stayed here during the UN Climate Summit). It offers a full service spa, three onsite restaurants, a championship golf course, marina, pony treks, and a variety of classic country pursuits including skeet shooting, falconry, fishing, and more. Stay at least 3 days to enjoy all there is to do!
Culloden House is a beautiful country estate in Inverness surrounded by pastoral landscapes and steeped in history. Travelers may recognize it from the Netflix series Outlander. I enjoyed a private whisky tasting (similar to a wine tasting where you learn about the history, production, and nuances of Scotlandβs most famous spirit), a history of the area told by a local in traditional Scottish attire, and a behind-the-scenes tour at Johnstonβs of Elgin (1797), the famous purveyor of tartans and cashmere for royals and haute couture fashion houses. Your family will love the soft and cozy souvenirs!
In the quaint village of Pitlochry is the beautifully renovated Fonab Castle with two excellent restaurants, glorious views of the lake and hills, and a full service spa. All the traditional countryside activities can be arranged from here and there is a popular theater festival during summer. Take a short walk along the river to Blair Athol Distillery (1798) where you can tour the production and storage rooms, learn the history and nuances of this distillery, and taste three distinct whiskies. This experience is a must for every curious traveler to Scotland, even those who donβt care for scotch!
Be sure to include a few days in St. Andrews, the birthplace of golf and home to the third oldest university in the English-speaking world. During my visit the weather was brisk but sunny and the town was vibrant. The University students provide a wonderful energy and the historic architecture, wide beach, and beautiful landscapes will keep you awestruck. Stay at the newly-renovated Rusaks Hotel overlooking the 18th hole of The Old Course. It has a classic style, two lovely view restaurants, and a cozy basement pub featuring local musicians.
Travellers to Scotland must not miss Edinburgh. The historic architecture in every direction is spellbinding and worth several days of exploration. I stayed in the Charlotte Square Hotel, a Kimpton townhouse property overlooking a leafy center square park. It is a wonderful, modern old hotel in a perfect location with fun restaurants and shopping close by.
While in Edinburgh consider an after-hours guided tour of the Royal Yacht Britannia or a walking tour with a private guide to learn the incredible stories of this historic city. I peeked in at the Palace where Princess Anne was in residence for royal duties and walked through Edinburgh Castle (12th century) which guards the city from its high ground perch, displays the Crown Jewels of Scotland, and was home to Mary Queen of Scots. History and luxury buffs will enjoy tea or a stay at the iconic Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian.
