AUTHENTICALLY CARIBBEAN: ANGUILLA
If you are looking for something beachy and authentic but also upscale, Anguilla in the British West Indies just may be the perfect fit. Sheltered from development and over-tourism in the absence of a major airport, Anguilla has maintained its low-key Caribbean vibe throughout the years. Which is not to say it is undiscovered and lacking service or amenities but visitors have always had to make an extra effort to get here and this has allowed time to stand still on much of the island. Thankfully, the jet set fell in love with the laidback feel and genuine people years ago which in turn drew interest from a few important hoteliers. Now we can all enjoy a slice of luxury in paradise. Isn’t it time for your next getaway?
Cap Juluca, a belmond resort
Set on a gorgeous crescent beach with marshmallow-white sand and azure-blue seas, Cap Juluca has been quietly holding court on Maunday’s Bay for 35 years. With wide open views across the channel to St. Martin and its iconic Moorish architecture, the property impresses with all-beachfront accommodations, elegant and unique styling, and flawless personal service. There is tennis and pickleball, a kids club and infinity pool, four restaurants, hop on/off bicycles, golf next door, and a plethora of organized activities on land and sea. Each room is assigned a host to anticipate and fulfill your every need as well as comfortable teak beach loungers with large market-style umbrellas, fresh towels, an ice chest, and attentive service all day long. Wellness enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating an expansive, state of the art Guerlain spa to rival the full scale gym and fitness offerings. During construction, spa services are faithfully executed at a dedicated villa on property.
malliouhana
The grande dame of Anguilla is Malliouhana, the first luxury resort to open on the island 40 years ago. She paved the way for upmarket tourism in this tranquil corner of the British West Indies bringing other luxury projects and hospitality jobs to the local economy which had been focused on fishing and salt harvesting. Today, tourism is the primary industry.
With lush tropical gardens, glamorous styling, and a stunning perch above the turquoise waters of Meads Bay, Malliouhana will appeal to guests who appreciate fresh, colorful design, calm seas for open water swimming, paddle boarding and snorkeling, and a choice of beachfront bars and restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. There is a large spa and gym, tennis and pickleball, hop on/off bicycles, two infinity pools, a kids club, the swanky Bar Soleil, and the island fare and romantic setting of Celeste. Malliouhana is fun and stylish, a perfect blend of Elizabeth Taylor and Jonathan Adler. The rooms and suites are expansive (starting at 700sf) and perfectly appointed.
quintessence
Relatively new on the island, this Relais & Chateaux property is the passion project of its art collector owner. With only 12 rooms/suites, a bar and restaurant, an extensive wine cellar, an infinity pool and tennis court, 24h butler service, and the pristine sands of Longs Bay Beach, this property will appeal to adults looking for a very peaceful, art-filled getaway or a unique property buyout. Children under 12y and pets need not apply.
Private villas
There are a variety of exceptional private villas scattered across the island offering up to 12 bedrooms, full housekeeping and kitchen staff, private tennis courts, beachfront access, and more. Villas are the perfect solution for guests needing complete privacy, a multi-generational family vacation, a friend group getaway, or a business retreat. We match clients to the right property to ensure a proper fit!
Getting here
Most travelers will fly from the US to neighboring St. Martin and take the 20 minute ferry across the channel. American Eagle now offers direct flights from a few US airports or you can connect in Puerto Rico. Of course, arranging a charter is always possible and infinitely easier! However you get here, expect that you will never want to leave.
